Placeholder is a vocal and gesturally mediated composition exploring the experience of dissociation (the feeling of detachment from the body, self, and reality) through trauma-informed practice. Using an all-looping, all-vocal approach from contemporary music-making, the work transforms the voice through granular synthesis, spatialisation, and wearable technology to externalise the fragmented and surreal qualities of dissociation.
The live voice is deconstructed into granular fragments, smearing intelligibility and creating a sonic representation of a self that feels distant, displaced, or disconnected. These fragmented vocal layers drift through space alongside the grounded acoustic voice, creating a tension between presence and absence. The dreamy, floating sound world reflects the paradoxical relationship between dissociation and flow: moments of disconnection existing alongside deep immersion and embodied engagement.
Gestural controllers extend the performer's bodily agency, allowing movement to shape looping, effects, and spatial positioning in real time. Informed by trauma-informed principles of safety, agency, and empowerment, Placeholder transforms an internal psychological experience into an embodied sonic environment, inviting audiences to encounter dissociation not as an abstract concept, but as a felt and sensory experience.
