Product details
An old friend of mine, Caroline Thompson, recently informed me
that she had in her possession a piano manuscript score of mine
with the title of Poco (the Italian word for "little"), composed
in the late 1970s. I was intrigued as I could not remember
writing a piece with this title, even though I considered, in
retrospect, that the title was quite appealing. I asked her to
send me a scan of the score and it turned out I had retitled the
piece in question as "Moon New-Risen" and included it in a volume
of short piano works I had composed called Fortune
Pieces (1978).
As I liked the title, I decided I should write another piano
piece titled Poco. This led to the idea of writing a
three-movement piece called Poco Meno Mosso. The Italian
expression "poco meno mosso" (a little less motion) is a standard
performance direction in classical music.
Accordingly the first movement ("Poco") is very short, the second
("Meno") is even shorter, and the last ("Mosso") is very
animated.
All three movements of this pandiatonic (white keys only) work
use similar intervallic ideas.
