Product details

In 2019 I fulfilled a life-long dream of writing a prelude and fugue for solo violin using the harmonic language of Bach. The catalyst was the preparation for a lecture/recital I gave with Anna Da Silva Chen at the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts 27 February 2020.
Titled "The Magic of Solo Violin," I outlined the historical reasons that the unaccompanied violin recital today is more the exception than the rule. I elucidated factors responsible for the solo violin works of Bach representing one of the most sublime levels of musical thought in the Western canon. Composers before Bach who inspired him, in addition to later composers who were influenced by him, were considered.
The experience of listening to so much counterpoint courtesy of a single stringed instrument provided the impetus for the new composition.
The prelude is playable in first position - conceivably a first for me.
In the fugue, I took pains to ensure that when a voice moves against a sustained note in another voice, the counterpoint is confined to adjacent strings. The fugue goes no higher than second position.
