Sheet Music: ScoreReflèts de la mer : flute solo / Peter Rankine.by Peter Rankine (2004)

Product details
Reflèts (reflections) are manifest in several ways: the piece is
in three sections, slow-fast-slow, with material from the first
section revisited in the third, thereby creating a rough symmetry
about the centre; the principal melodies, especially in the slow
movements, are turned more-or-less upside down, in the way of
reflections in water (even rippley water such as the sea - la
Mer); and at a very specific and personal level, the acronym of
my daughter Marion's name is MER: when she first performed the
work in 2005, it was indeed reflected back to me.
The use of French in the title accommodated these
interpretations. Additionally, it is a small tribute to the fine
flute music of French composers around a century ago. Debussy's
Syrinx, for instance, and the way that composer wrote for the
flute in his chamber and orchestral works, helped establish the
instrument's unique voice as we have come to know and love it.
(Indeed, the modern flute seems to have been born in France
around the late nineteenth, early twentieth century. The
confluence of winning instrument design, wonderful players and
pedagogues, and inspired composers put the flute on the musical
map as never before.)
