Product details
Michelangelo believed that the process of sculpting was one of 'releasing' the final form of the sculpture from the block of marble. The idea that the finished work (or a version of it) is already implicit in the most 'unformed' of materials is irresistible to a composer; music can be gradually unveiled ('released') in its medium: time, through its primary process: development. (Wolfgang Rihm might call this the 'hunt' for form; the work discovering itself 'in real time' as it progresses along with the listener's perception of it).
In this trio, after a brief introduction (perhaps an image of 'the will to create'), the first section is a hectic, headlong churn of simple, deliberately 'unformed' musical ideas turned over and over until finding continuity. Brief sostenuto windows into a potential 'finished work' are glimpsed, waxing longer and more developmentally sophisticated and lyrical until they become the work.
This content is all a reflection on my Michelangelo song cycles, "I keep your burning glances" and "In Stone", and could form a prelude or interlude between these large settings of Michelangelo's poetry.
