Product details

Retro Rag for cello and piano was composed for Susan Blake, cello and John Martin, piano.
Retro Rag follows in the footsteps of many other Ragtime pieces, in offering melodies set with the familiar syncopated rhythm, and a rhythmic drive which is evident throughout.
The section in D flat major presents a nostalgic melody which dips in and out of semitones in the same way as a Victorian handkerchief wafting the scent of lavender.
The C minor section is equally nostalgic with its falling melodies and plaintive major and minor thirds.
The combination of cello and piano provides an exciting opportunity for me to bring back the nostalgic raindrops of piano sound which I once heard as a very small child walking along the streets of Sydney at night with my parents and listening to piano sounds drifting into the street from the building above. And the cello of all instruments can evoke nostalgia at any time.
As with any Ragtime music the performers should feel free to improvise a little, and to play with a varying tempo to suit the mood of the piece.
