Product details
Peter Sheridan, Lecturer at Monash University, commissioned this
work for a reading session of flutists at the 2013 Australian
Flute Festival in Canberra, ACT. He wanted a lyrical piece that
was fairly easy to sight-read, and that could be played even if
the full complement of players was unavailable.
I choose to adapt and arrange a section of my first clarinet
quartet, written way back in 1983. It fulfilled all of Peter's
requirements, and I've become quite fond of the sonorities in
this piece myself. However, the section I adapted can be
understood a little more with this quote from the notes of the
original quartet:
"This work holds, as its genesis, my own confused feelings about
the trip back to Ulster - my first since leaving it in 1973. I
was unsure why I was feeling so confused and anxious until I
stood by the grave of my younger sister, Sherrill Lynne. She had
died in infancy, while I was little more than a toddler myself.
Yet the grief I felt standing by her final resting-place was a
great release for me. Years of grief seemed to pour out, and the
confusion of the weeks before the trip and the trip itself was
finally resolved."
After that experience, I went back to an aunt's house, sat down
at a piano, and played the music I have adapted here.
