Sketch was created in response to the iterative 'sketching-like' texture of Ligeti's Piano Études 16 and 17. In these pieces, Ligeti set up modes and chose pitches as if he were an artist sketching a rough picture, with back and forward pencil strokes across the page, but instead of a page, he sketched stepwise movements across the diatonic collections used. I applied this idea to the construction of rhythmic patterns in Sketch. I also incorporated other concepts related to fractal geometry and chaos theory.
