Solace was written in response to the portrait Alice & Fish by David Stewart which was awarded fourth place in the National Portrait Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 (UK). The relationship between the foreground and background of the photograph is the specific concern of the piece, especially in assessing the extent to which the girl is complemented by her surroundings. There are two distinct types of music: an aggressive, angular style associated with the young girl, and more distant, lyrical ideas representative of her expansive environment.
