Song of City Ghosts was commissioned by the Southern Cross Soloists as part of the 'Smoke Encrypted Whispers' project, for their 2008 Music and Words Series. As part of this project twenty-three Queensland composers were each commissioned to write a miniature work that responded to a poem by Samuel Wagan Watson.
Song of City Ghosts was directly influenced by the poem, 'Ghosts of Boundary Street'.
