Product details

Stealing Lollies is an instrumental interlude from the score of my opera The Water Babies in which Tom the chimney-sweep turned water-baby rifles the sweet-cabinet of the formidable Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, one of his fairy guardians. Originally for solo bassoon, it may be accessed by any low wind or brass instrument, e.g. bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, trombone or euphonium. The piano part which was added later fills out the harmonic texture. The swing section (bars 10-41) may be appropriated for jazz performance. There should be a contrast in mood between the breezy A section and the more wistful bridge and coda - after all, Stealin' Lollies is not to be encouraged!

Pages: 1 score 5p. -- B4 (portrait)) and 1 part (2p. -- B4 (portrait))

Difficulty: Medium — AMEB Grade 5

Duration: 5 mins

Dedication note: Dedicated to Sarah Butler

Commissioned by Sarah Butler.

The opening Misterioso is the stuff of a myriad of cartoon cop shows and of musicals such as Oliver! The main theme is in easy swing style and the more reflective bridge dips its lid in the direction of the great Thelonious Monk.

Adapted in 2002 from the score of Act III of the opera The Water Babies.

May be made available for other lead instruments of similar range (eg. bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, euphonium) on request.

This is a handwritten edition — it is not typeset.

This edition produced 9 Oct 02.
