The stradella piano accordion, says composer Alexander Voltz, is an instrument 'tarnished by an enduring and gravely erroneous stereotype: that it is merely a light instrument, capable only of comedic gimmicks and vaudeville acts.' In fact, its unique range of colours and registers makes it as flexible and multifaceted as a grand pipe organ - yet also portable and intimate. Multiply that potential threefold, with not one but three accordions played by Australia's finest virtuosi, and the result is simply brilliant: an intricate interweaving of melodies, harmonies and timbres evoking a broad landscape of musical emotion. This sparkling set of pieces pays homage to the accordion's Italian heritage: the town of Stradella in Italy has a long history as an accordion-making centre.
