There are six Studies and two other pieces titled Interlude I (Music for Sleep) and Waltzophrenic. All are quite short: Study 4 is the longest, lasting about 2 minutes.

Each of the pieces has its own individuality as it exploits usually one (sometimes two) idea(s). This is characteristic of a study as can be seen especially in the only slightly changing repetitive patterns of Studies 1, 2 and 3. Some are quite static and of those, Study 1 and Interlude 1 are atonal, but Study 4 displays elements of tonality. The latter is also evident in 'Waltzophrenic' in the guise of bitonality.
