Product details
The aim of this work is to approach the aesthetic beauty of individual and pitch-varied water drops experienced with a garden suikinkutsu. The performers must approach each note with subtlety and precision, evoking a similar atmosphere of this evocative soundscape. The performers are not to play together, but use the score as a guide to a zen-like improvisation with space and contemplation.
The guitarist uses a metal or glass blues slide on 3rd finger of
left hand to "finger" the notes. Both hands can be used to stop
the string from sounding as the slide contacts the string so no
distracting sound is made other than the plucked notes. Tiny
glissandi /shakes can be occasionally added.
Duration of notes are not defined but relative. The performers
must decide this using their own aesthetic and sensitivity.
Subtle variations are accetable to contribute to mystery and the
aesthetic performance design. The guitar is to begin and viola
may enter after an apropriate reflective duration. The performers
are welcome to interact in minutae, e.g. a guitar water-drop
plunk at the end of the sustained disappearing harmonic on the
viola. Transitions to melodic playing must be made without
interrupting the water drop atmosphere.
