Product details

In 1945 when Miriam Hyde was examining for the AMEB in the NSW Riverina, she played her quite difficult Intermezzo for Left Hand (Grade 8) at a musical evening in Hay.
In the audience was a Mr Bray, who was not only intrigued that a piece for one hand could sound harmonically complete as if played by two hands, but he was awakened to the possibility that his very young daughter Susan who was born without a right hand, might be able to learn to play the piano after all.
Miriam Hyde promptly set about writing these pieces (including the little poems) for Susan, while travelling by train between other Riverina towns. Mr Bray gave permission for the collection to be named after his daughter, viz. Susan Bray's Album.
Publishers considered there was no market for one-hand pieces, so Miriam Hyde "filled them out" and modified them for two hands (although The Cuckoo is the only one that still could be played by the left hand only). They were first published in that form in 1947, and are reproduced in this re-issue of the Album.
In 1984, all but the last two pieces were made available as originally written, in the Allans publication Piano Music for One Hand Only, compiled by Shirley Harris.

Grades: Preliminary to 1st.
