Product details

The Gathering is a rhythmic, driving piece written for a jazz piano trio. It features a fairly long melody using repetitive structures that develops in sections. The melody itself is in the bass register to be played together by pianist and bassist. The drummer's role is to accompany, provide 16th note propulsion, and interact with the rhythms of the melody. The improvisation is seen as a further development and abstraction of what has gone before. There is a very short reprise of the first four bars of the melody at the end to finish.

The piano samples part can be omitted, or played by another instrument. If played by triggering a sample sequence, I suggest having different loops for each section of the piece. The timing does not need to match with the band's tempo.
The loop sequence can be interrupted.
In the Solo Section (Letter C), try to be strongly interactive as a trio with all players taking a soloistic approach whilst also supporting each other with a piano solo 'upper part.'
The drum notation is provided as a starting point following what Toby Hall played on the 'Gather' album (ASM016). Experiment with this to see what fits best with the trio.

Published by: Australian Music Centre — 1 facsimile score (10p. -- A4 (portrait))

Difficulty: Medium — There is some co-ordination skill required for the pianist, and the drummer should have facility with 16th note feels.

Duration: 5 mins

Commission info: 'The Gathering' was written for performance by the Alister Spence Trio and has been in the group's repertoire since 2020. It was recorded and released on the trio's 2025 album, 'Gather' in February 2025.

While this piece is quite distinctive in its compositional character it is influenced by a number of music styles and genres. It is most definitely an acoustic jazz piece but displays influences from minimalism, rock, and tips a hat to free jazz (in it's tonally ambiguous solo section that can most definitely depart from the D pedal point if the band chooses).
