With the Covid 19 pandemic Melbourne is forced into Lockdown.

Stage 3 Restrictions are declared by our Premier Dan Andrews on 8th July 2020.

That is we are told to isolate from public places, friends and family. Our Premier Dan Andrews tells us "You will be able to go out to go to work if you have to, to go shopping for the things you need when you need them, to study, to provide care or to get care. People are well acquainted with those rules."

Most follow these rules

My friend, poet Sandy Jeffs, decided to keep a daily diary of the events as they unfolded. Sandy did this in the form of haiku poetry. (5, 7, 5 syllables )

After reading Sandy's extraordinary haiku diary I decided to compose a symphony developed from her poems.

The Poetics of a Plague

The 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic: A Haiku Diary, by Sandy Jeffs

It turns out that each day provides enough narrative material for a single movement.

The Lockdown lasted 112 days.

I decide to compose in the classical four movement symphonic form

For now four days is enough. I dare say Haydn would be tempted to do the lot.

It is fascinating to see the way in which one narrative form connects with another. On every level there are surprises.

Sandy's words provide rhythm, structure, and content.

I approach the music as though composing in songform where the meaning of the words provides a melodic idea. The syllabic structure of the words provides rhythm. The phrases give shape to the melody.

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc in relation to this work:
This symphony does not follow the classical symphonic structure. It follows the given poetic structure. Even so, at times, i do attempt to keep to the traditional forms. e.g. Mov. 4 is more or less in Rondo form.
