Product details

In her 29th year, pianist and composer Cathy Harley boldly placed herself among some of the legends of Australian jazz on her first recording. She sounds as if she belongs there. In club performances her quintet has shown itself to be one of the great Australian bands, and its bright qualities are well caught on disc. As with several others of her rather special generation - Andrew Robson and Scott Tinkler come immediately to mind - she is an exceptional musician and composer. Her compositions have given us a wonderful opportunity to hear such master improvisors as Bernie McGann and Warwick Alder playing against each other over a fresh harmonic framework. The interludes where they begin swapping phrases and then play in free counterpoint over the codas of two tunes were quite spontaneous. The two just kept playing, as it were, after the performance had ostensibly finished.

Duration: 52 min.

Recorded in association with Jim McLeod's Jazztrack ABC Radio.
