Available for immediate download
The first 36 bars of this piece (page 1) are a faithful transcript of a quadrille for pianoforte by Tasmanian composer (and talented painter) Henry Mundy (1798 - 1848). It was published in 1838 as part of "Eight Sets of Quadrilles" (This is No. 3 from Set 1).These quadrilles were considered lost until a copy was found in 2014 in a Launceston second-hand bookshop. Fortunately they fell immediately and serendipitously into the hands of Peter C. Sims who happened to be researching Henry Mundy at the time. Peter's beautiful limited edition "Colonial Artist Henry Mundy and his music" (self-published in 2014) tells what is known of this man as an introduction to facsimile scores of the music. The story of Mundy's life and his sad early demise make fascinating reading.
I had the honour to perform the first set of quadrilles in the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at the launch of Peter's book. I was very taken with the music. Mundy wrote it for his students at a girl's school in Tasmania's Midlands. It is well crafted, simple and engaging and writing these variations was a lot a fun.
