This work features clapsticks made, performed, and recorded by First Nations percussionist Adam Manning. Culturally, this work is underpinned by a rhythm first approach with reference to its use of the world's firsthand held instrument, the clapsticks. Therefore, this work is deeply personal and uses rhythm to express three lived experiences (sections, as per below). For example:
Section One is based on an Awabakal Mountain, Warrawelong (Mt Sugarloaf), the largest mountain in the Hunter region. When listening to this section, as per the below time code, one will observe the rhythmic/textural increases and decreases. These changes reflect the overall shape of the mountain. Section Two is based on the modern reality that we are often too busy to acknowledge the mountain. This modern reality is reflected through an increased tempo and a more intense rhythmic nature, as per the following time code: 1:39 - 2:20
Section Three is based on a Worimi wetland. This wetland holds personal significance for Manning for two reasons; it's located on country where he grew up and more recently it has been a mental sanctuary for his family to slow down and connect. When listening to this section, one will observe this concept through natural free-flowing rhythms. Section Three, time code: 2:22 - 2:51
In conclusion, Manning's clapstick compositional approach is as per his ancestors, whereby the clapsticks form the pulse of the music. This approach demonstrates how First Nations storytelling practices can be applied to a contemporary musical setting.
