Product details
To my knowledge, there is no better book on compositional craft than Paul Klee's Pedagogical Sketchbook. In the Pedagogical Sketchbook, Klee anatomises the internal kernel of gesture, examining the horizontal and vertical dynamics of its makeup. Klee's formation of an arrow weighed deeply on my mind through the composition of my string quartet Winged Links. The main concern for me was to experiment with how the strength of pull (potential energy) affected the continuity in dynamic propulsion (thrust). Even the vertical pull of the cello string for a 'Bartok pizzicato' played an important role. I divided the piece into 3 sections, each concentrating on the construction of potential and kinetic energies in a point, line and plane.
The string quartet is indebted to Klee's painting Beschwingte Bindungen, which the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona translated as Winged Links. However, I have only ever been interested in works of art as a source from which to study proportion and form and not so much for 'inspirational' value. What struck me about Beschwingte Bindungen was its association with flight, for this is what my string quartet is really concerned about.
