Work Overview
Writing For Cello has been an act of role play - roleplaying the cellist, and sometimes the cello; projecting different versions of self - a theatre of musical selves that suggest to me some of the possible variety of social and psychological self-identities, both simultaneous and sequential as we move through life; affirming the continual inter-play between the self and other selves, and the unavoidable contradiction of a reflective self that attempts to stand back from and give coherence to these experiences and relationships. For me, the piece has been a field for trying to make sense of these ideas, but what it has become is, of course, another piece of music for that wonderful instrument, the cello.

Commission note: For Cello was composed for cellist Eleanor Lewis in response to hearing her premiere with baritone Simon Lobelson and cellist Cathy Tabrett of 'Crucifix', a work which was until then unperformed. This revived my interest in writing for cello.

Apart from a renewed interest in writing for cello following the premiere of 'Crucifix' for baritone and two cellos in 2001, the primary impetus for the composition of 'For Solitary Cello' was the thoughts and questions about identity sparked by re-reading the novel 'The Black Book' by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk.
