Three Stages of Accepting an Ugly Self-Portrait : for piano / Ronan Apcar.
Library shelf no. 786.2/APC 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Three Stages of Accepting an Ugly Self-Portrait is a solo piano work in three continuous sections. Inspired by Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Grey' and César Franck's 'Prélude, Chorale et Fugue,' this piece is an imagined confrontation with an ugly self-portrait and the three stages you might go through trying to process it: shock, grief, and a pisstake.
The three stages of 'processing' are each a distinct musical section; at first, there is an improvisatory prelude representing the shock and spiralling; in the middle, there is a passacaglia-chorale filled with grief and pathos; and to finish, the schrezo is for when you come to terms with the self-portrait through humour - taking the piss out of it, possibly in a state of denial.
