Work Overview
String Quartet No. 3 was commissioned internally by the Elder Conservatorium of Music for the Australian String Quartet. Sketches on the piece began in March 2025, with much of the composition completed between July and August, and final revisions concluded on 22 September 2025.
The quartet is structured in three movements, each interconnected through recurring thematic material. The first movement, L'inizio (Italian for The Beginning), establishes an agitated character driven by rapid triplet figurations that weave restlessly throughout the texture against the principal thematic ideas. The movement is marked by strong contrasts, shifting between passages of mystery and menace and moments of passion and lyrical intensity.
The second movement, Interludio (Interlude), offers a brief but poignant moment of tranquillity, setting a calm yet contemplative atmosphere. Here, thematic material from the first movement returns in an augmented and slowed form, creating a sense of reflection. Hints of the third movement are subtly foreshadowed within this stillness.
The final movement, Finale, brings the work to a vigorous and rhythmically charged conclusion. While introducing fresh thematic ideas, the melodic contours and intervallic relationships remain firmly tied to the earlier movements, unifying the work as a whole.
Although not explicitly programmatic, the themes are almost treated as characters, evolving across the movements in a narrative arc. From their tense and turbulent beginnings to their eventual transformation, the themes chart a journey that culminates in triumph. In this way, the work suggests an underlying story of struggle and renewal, moving through conflict and adversity towards a final sense of hope and resolution.
