Work Overview

The title of Partita Dalriada, for clarinet and piano, reflects a dual character, perhaps even a split personality. It is a Partita in the early eighteenth-century sense, of being a suite of (five) short movements, each of which has particular metric and rhythmic characteristics. Dalriada is the ancient Gaelic name for the country now known by the English name of 'Scotland', and acknowledges my paternal highland heritage (hence the dedication to my father). This connection is made through the borrowing and reworking of an old and enchanting Gaelic song 'My love is lost to me', also known as the tune chosen by Robert Burns for his song of 1788 'O I were on Parnassus Hill'. The great advantage of adapting for an instrumental medium is that, separated from either of the poetic texts, the song can be explored and varied in ways that go beyond the original, hopefully enhancing without exhausting its beauty. The melody of this song is presented in its entirety, but in different harmonic and metric contexts, in the second and fourth movements. The third is a set of four variations on elements of the theme. The outer movements frame the song: the first is an introductory prelude; the fifth is an energetic toccata that plays with constantly shifting metres and rhythmic accentuation.
