Work Overview
From the Black Sea draws on the vitality and expressive freedom of the folk traditions that surround the Black Sea region. Inspired by the energy, spontaneity and virtuosity of Romani performance practice, the work imagines a contemporary "Black Sea Tzigane" - rhythmically flexible, spirited and highly conversational. While rooted in folk idioms, it is not a direct arrangement of traditional material, but an original work that seeks to capture the colour, exuberance and improvisatory spirit of this rich musical landscape.
