Brumby-Scena
Posted by Alec Raymond on 22 August, 2013
I first heard this on the radio when it was first recorded by the ABC. I had been lectured in History of Music by Dr Brumby in 1971 when I took his great course as an 'extra' in my BA (French & English Language & Literature) ). I heard the Uni of Qld choral society (QUMS) sing his 'Baroque Angels' and had sung some of his tuneful choral music at Royal School of Church Music Summer Schools. I had, apart from some short chamber pieces at lunchtime concerts, not heard his orchestral pieces. I now have several Jade Recordings and enjoy still his 'old-fashioned'melodic romanticism. This 'Scena', in the form of a C19th Italian operatic scene is a piece that has given me much pleasure since I first bought s cassette of it in its 1st release. Listen to the lovely cavatina beginning and its development, then the cabaletta final section. Then listen to the Bellini Oboe Concerto which is in the same form. Brumby's piece is as lovely. I wish Diana Doherty would perform and record a new performance of it. Brumby's delightful music is much under-rated (listen also to his Sun symphony-Jade Records- QSO conducted by Dr Robert Boughen-another Australian choral composer/conductor much underrated). May the ABC or one of the superb independant Australian record labels discover his music for new performances as Jade has for the premieres.
