Work Overview
Nocturne
This evening song has a nostalgic atmosphere as in the Nocturnes of John Field and Frederic Chopin. The underlying jazz harmony is interwoven into the lyrical melody line. It is an Andante in ternary form. It begins in B minor, modulates to B major and returns to B minor.
Nocturne was originally composed for alto flute. The confluence of jazz, romanticism and contemporary western art music prevails throughout.
Miniature Bop
Be-Bop is a jazz style of small combos from the late 1940's. Miniature Bop was inspired by the brilliant soloists Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown.
It is in G major and passes through Ab major and A major before returning to G major. A variation of the first 16 bars follows, alike an improvised jazz solo. The middle and last sections are repeated. The harmony is characterised by II - V chord progressions. This piece is intended to be bit of jazz fun for a classical performer. It was originally composed for piccolo.
