Work Overview
Folk Songs 76 were arranged for the Consort of Sydney in
1976. Commissioned by Musica Viva Australia, they were designed
to display the many different musical colours and moods of the
Consort during their tours for Musica Viva in Australia and
Europe. I researched volumes of folk songs and chose those which
appealed to me and would suit the Consort, which consisted of
soprano voice; flute/recorder; guitar; cello; harpsichord and
small percussion.
In this publication of folk songs from France, Mongolia, Greece
and Canada, there is scope to substitute instruments. Flute can
be exchanged for recorder and viola could possibly be used
instead of cello. Percussion instruments are of a variety easy to
find - tambourine, small bell and drum - and in Kharchin a
keyboard with chimes available can be substituted successfully
for chimes.
