Work Overview

Lullaby is an evocative lullaby sung by a mother to her child as she soothes him or her to sleep. The lyrical mezzo-soprano line is not the exhausted pleading cry of a mother at her wits end, rather a loving and expressive song that asks the performers to take their time to connect with the music and text. The sparse piano accompaniment allows the music time to breathe and gradually fades away as the child drifts off to sleep, comforted by the lilting accompaniment, a mother's voice and the images of "rich green fields with girls and boys, bright coloured butterflies and so many toys". Lullaby offers the performer an opportunity to explore different ways in which to enhance the emotive, expressive and storytelling nature of the work through variations in timing, tone and dynamics to effectively convey the love of a mother as she soothes her child to sleep.
