Work Overview

This little piece, written for flutes of all sizes and sorts, was commissioned by Melbourne-based flutist, Peter Sheridan and his Monash University Flute Ensemble, for the 2013 National Australian Flute Convention in Canberra, ACT. Peter wanted a fanfare for 2 -3 minutes duration for the convention, based on the instruments the ensemble has available. The unusual instruments that the ensemble has to draw on led to the idea of writing a piece for rare, or uncommon flutes - hence, the title. Thus, there are small tips of the hat to Copland's famous fanfare, particularly in the voicings of chords, but the rhythmic drive of the work, and my idiosyncratic methods of creating polyphony through the use of displacement, try to give the piece an identity of its own.
