Work Overview
This work originally appeared as a solo number for the character
of "Carlton" in the musical Comets and Chocolates. In
the scene and the song, Carlton looks back on his life from the
advantage or 50 or so years and finds that his life was nothing
like he'd expected it to be when he'd been a boy dreaming of his
future. Instead, it was all much more thrilling and dangerous,
with many unexpected events.
The song was performed in the musical by Greg Shand, who helped
create the character and on whose life and career the musical is
very loosely based. The premiere season was in September 2013 at
The Seymour Centre, Sydney, as part of the Sydney Fringe
Festival, where it was promoted, much to its creators' collective
delight, as one of the highlights of the festival. This song is
the most adaptable of all of the songs to a choral setting, and,
considering the original show, a men's chorus seemed to be the
best place to start! The music and words remain unaltered from
the show version, except for the addition of harmonised chorus
parts.
