Work

Strolling on the Strand : for flute quartet

by Katrina Emtage (2024)

Work Overview

Imagine a walk on the Irish coast, waves gently lapping the shore and birds wheeling in the wind. This suite starts with an arrangement of the lullaby Mo Chaora Bhán (my white lamb) and then dissolves into 2 slip jigs, A Fig for a Kiss and Give me a Drink of Water before a misty transition featuring bass and alto flutes leads into a rousing version of the Glen Cottage Polkas.

Work Details

Year: 2024

Instrumentation: Flute, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute.

Duration: 8 min.

Difficulty: Advanced — some extended techniques used

Dedication note: this work was written for Hifilutin Flute Quartet

Written for: Hifilutin flute quartet

As these tunes are derived from traditional Irish music it is strongly recommended that the performers familiarise themselves with the tunes through source recordings that capture the style. Whilst every effort has been made to show nuance in the notation this is an aural tradition which must be respected.
