Work Overview

The Journey Down was created around stories from (Gija) Warmun artists who painted their stories on Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool (Gija for Old Car). These artists were subsequently interviewed about their works and these interviews were used as the basis of the storytelling of The Journey Down which was projected on the corrugated iron screens behind the old car and mapped to the Old Car itself.

Collaborations began between Gija community of Warmun, producer and cultural advisor Madeline Purdie, Tura's Tos Mahoney, Miriwoong songmen and dancers Chris Griffiths and Preben Ningarmarra, Gija performer, Andrew Daylight, Yamatji didjeridu master Mark Atkins with leading Australian composer/performers Aviva Endean, Tristen Parr, Vanessa Tomlinson and animation and video designer Sohan Ariel Hayes creating this cultural opus based on Gija story.

Each animation, gave life, imparted breath to the painted sonic sculpture Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool, which was itself a collaboration between Gija painters Shirley Purdie, Gordon Barney, Nancy Nodea, Lindsay Malay, Gabriel Nodea, Mark Nodea, Eddie Nugget, April Nugget and Charlene Carrington. performers alongside and a selection of artists from around Australia.
