'breathe' : for solo bass flute / Azariah Felton.
Library shelf no. 788.35/FEL 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
'breathe' explores the unique resonance of the bass flute, as well as the challenge it poses due to the large amount of air required to sustain long tones and consistent pitch. The piece uses both exhalation and inhalation as equal components of sound generation, and allows the player to choose the time that is taken for each breath. Vocal and textural sounds are layered with the breath so that the player an the instrument breathe together, and the resonance of the flute carries the sound when the performer cannot.
This piece was composed for and developed with Dr. Lisa Cella, who generously shared her time and expertise to support the composition of this piece, including by workshopping drafts of the piece and giving feedback on the graphic notation.
