Work Overview
The world of Schéhérazade expresses Ravel's fascination with Asia and the Orient. The first of the three songs, Asie, describes all the exotic imagined elements of the mysterious world that Ravel never visited. The second and third songs delve more into the feelings of the story teller herself, who must pique the Sultan's interest with her nightly stories, or face death. Schéhérazade is desperate to prolong her life, giving the work a strong dramatic contrast to what is to come. The arrangement seeks to capture as much of the colour of the original as possible in a chamber setting, whilst allowing performers a certain freedom from requiring a full orchestra.
