Work Overview
Fields was composed in early 2020 in response to the then-emerging COVID19 pandemic. A planned premiere performance in Germany, in 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic. In addition to the dedication to the victims of COVID19 throughout the world, the piece bears a secondary dedication, to my first shakuhachi teacher Riley Lee, and to my shakuhachi students Alexandra Kraus and Nina Haarer, now shakuhachi masters in their own right. These three shakuhachi masters were intended as the performers for the premiere, and the piece was composed with them in mind.
