Work Overview
On November 27 2024, amongst the remnants of Al-Nasr Children's Hospital in Gaza, reporter Mohamed Baalousha found the corpses of at least four babies continuing to decompose, still connected to broken machines, following the Israeli Defense Force's besiegement of the facility.
the day you hear recognises the only sounds that these children heard: ones of war, destruction, yelling, breathing, hospital machines and familiar voices of hospital staff and parents.
To call this a life for these children is an overstatement. To mourn a life that was never truly lived is an overbearing and unjustifiable loss.
For the day you hear of this loss is another day these children could have heard the beautiful sounds of this world.
I would like to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital - it was an honour and a truly life changing experience being allowed to visit your world. I would also like to extend my thanks to Vivian Pham for her time, her voice, and her continual effort to create incredible art inspired by the genocide, for without her, I would never have had the courage to create this work.
