Helen Gifford's travels to India early in her creative life have had a lasting influence on various aspects of her music. Parvati is Shiva's second consort who tended him in his cave while in grief at the death of his wife, then experiences years of penance in the wilderness before renewal and well-being

Instrumentation: Two versions: Clarinet in B flat ; or Clarinet in B flat, A and E flat (one for each of the three movements).
