Work Overview
An early work, this three movement Sonata recalls Bach's works for solo violin or solo cello, where a single instrument is used to generate a multitude of contrapuntal textures and sonorities. While some sections of the Sonata are cast in a tonal language more expansive than that of the Baroque, others adhere to Bach's harmonic idiom. The Sonata is dedicated to Zina Schiff, who first performed it at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, 17 May 1995. The Sonata was recorded by Zina Schiff as the centrepiece of King David's Lyre, the disc released in celebration of Jerusalem's 3,000th anniversary.
