Work Overview
The Mythical Creatures song cycle is a collection of pieces for voice(s) and instrumental ensemble describing various mythical beings from cultures around the world. Each continent is represented by at least one such creature. The colourful text comes from the pen of Brisbane poet Svyetlana Hadgraft.
For practical reasons the work is divided into 2 parts of 5 songs each. The suggested performance order of the songs in Part 1 is Mermaid, Sphinx, Aziza, Bunyip and Jaguar. Each of these pieces can be performed as soprano solos with ensemble accompaniment. Alternatively Sphinx and Bunyip can be baritone or counter tenor solos with ensemble accompaniment. Jaguar can be performed as a duet between soprano and baritone (or counter tenor) with ensemble accompaniment.
