Work Overview

Stephen Lalor's Flute Quartet consists of 3 movements.

I. 'Flying' - 'Soaring and swirling. Our musicians are in full flight in this breathtaking music by Australian composer Stephen Lalor. .. Lalor's 'Flying' is passionate, wistful music that's instantly affecting. Its long and beautiful melodic lines seem to lift us high above the clouds, propelled by gentle yet insistent rhythms motoring away underneath. In its calmer moments there's a sense of weightlessness, of effortlessly floating through the air, but the momentum always returns to carry us forwards on our journey' - Sydney Symphony Orchestra online, 3 February 2002

II. 'Reflection' -Atmospheric and peaceful, 'Reflection' ebbs and flows in gently unfolding ideas and cascading runs which are perfectly suited to the character of the flute quartet.

III. 'East-West' - East meets West in this pulsating, melodious piece. The bright opening theme initially recalls Celtic sounds, then returns in a more eastern minor mode, interspersed with a darker undercurrent that bubbles along in dialogue between the instruments.
