Score [ePDF]
Meditations : for violin [eScore] / Evan Lawson.
Work Overview
While in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to use the time at home to try and read some of the seminal books that I hadn't had the time or energy to focus on previously. That brought me to Descartes' Meditations. While reading, I was also developing a solo violin work, with the idea of it being, firstly, something that could be rehearsed while we in isolation, and secondly, a piece that was meditative and could be used as part of yoga or meditation sessions.
All these ideas converged into a substantial work for solo violin that had at its centre a stateliness, combined with meditative and repetitive musical ideas. At times, these ideas are a little awkward for the musician. They must hold some slightly awkward double stops and melodic ideas, but the concept is that one is sitting in discomfort. Meditating and holding musical focus for the length of the work.
