Work Overview
The text takes passages from Emily Brontë's poems The night is darkening round me and I'm happiest when most away. The protagonist is transfixed by a violent storm; it renders her motionless, transporting her to a state of ecstasy, beyond the here and now, calm, ethereal.
After those eternal models, Erlkönig, Der Tod und das Mädchen, and the "ewig, ewig" of Der Abschied from Das Lied von der Erde. It is about that which we cannot know, and about breath: the taking away of breath, the suspension of breath, the seeming possibility of endless breath.
