Edge of a Blazing Sky : for strings / Abigail Lui.
Library shelf no. 784.2/LUI 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Edge of a Blazing Sky is inspired by Gil Jamieson's panorama Jay Creek. I was deeply moved by the work's fearsome scale and sense of contrast between land and sky - by its blazing sun, tall mountains, and rich red earth.
This piece likewise incorporates bright and dark colour contrasts. Transparent violin melodies dive and whistle above smudgy accompaniment, rapid passagework undergirds layers of slowly unfolding song lines, and hazy rhythmic figures are surprisingly recontextualised as joyful folk music. In doing so, the piece explores how great expanses can make us feel small, and the longing to come face-to-face with beauty beyond ourselves.
