Work Overview

I wrote this piece based on my experiences visiting Queensland's Southern Downs region. I'm so grateful to those I met for their warm welcome, and for how generously they shared their stories with me: stories of connection, persistence, and the complex histories of their communities.

Through contrasting musical scenes, the piece explores those many layers of memory that reside in a place. Swiftly undulating basslines and careening violin melodies recall the rolling hills outside Warwick, with shrieking cockatoos winging through the sky. Later in the piece, gently shifting textures evoke the mists around Killarney. Thundering orchestral passages capture the roar of water at Queen Mary Falls, before joyfully returning to that opening scene of distant and rolling hills.
