Work

This is a poem for autumn : soprano and string quartet

by Clare Maclean (2014)

Work Overview

This piece is a setting of a poem by Janet Frame which speaks of something beyond our understanding - a 'hinterland' - which is yet as close as breath. The music draws on several waulking melodies from Scotland, where Janet's family originated, and the piano sonata in Bb by Schubert, of whom she wrote, 'Schubert is home.' The falling three note call of the chickadee is present as a thread throughout, a reference to Janet Frame's time in the United States and to 'inklings, and the gravity star.'
