Work Overview

Trombone is the narrator but sometimes Trombone takes on the role of Mulan.

The first movement follows the text from the original story (6th century). From verse 1 -14 where Mulan takes on the responsibilities for her father to become a fearless warrior.

Movement 2 begins at verse 15-17, Mulan fulfills her duty for 12 years and is a renowned warrior and leader of men. The melodic line is kept to some extent in pentatonic mode. Not the harmony.

Movement 3 begins at verse 18-31ith the authoritative sounds of the Khan rewarding his servants of war. Mulan wants none of this. She wants only a fine steed to carry her home.

Mulan flies from the clamor of Khan in his glory and vanishes across hills and valleys to her home and family.

Here she meets enters into the complexities of family life and resumes her identity as a woman. Her men are shocked to see Mulan as a woman.

Mulan is a popular story well known in China and Asian countries. It has been produced as an animation film if USA and Japan.
