Work Overview

Peacemaker Tattoo was written for the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Cottbus State Theater (conductor: Evan Christ) in 2011. The brief was to write a concert piece, no longer than five minutes, to proceed the ninth symphony of Gustav Mahler. Peacemaker Tattoo is in five short movements, and is an exercise in musical erasure. A 'dumb' military theme on piccolo, with snare drum accompaniment, is orchestrated in various ways such that it should appear to disappear. 'Tattoo' in the title refers to the drum patterns that signal to soldiers to return to their quarters. 'Peacemaker', although often associated with the celebrated single action revolver of the same name, refers to the process of making peace. There is an ambivalence towards military music in the work, which is a tribute to the marches in Gustav Mahler's symphonies.
