Work Overview

"All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow."

- Leo Tolstoy

Vol translates directly as both 'stolen' and 'flight', encapsulating a fleeting moment between a land now exiled and the unknown. A transgression between worlds with abrupt interjections between material that seems, at times, to be jarring between early 20th C nostalgia of inflections upon the soprano saxophone placed against correlating force and drive of the piano. All moves to a state of rest and stillness - a space in which on can observe and simply be enraptured within a moment of what old and what is new.

The flight is a result and arises not in the tumultuous moments but in the space and recollections of peace that open to the eye of the observer in spaces of breath and recollection. Importantly, instances of rest allow space yet no sense of repose. Once a haven of safety now stolen, one must take flight.
